Content Management Systems- do what they sound like - they help you manage your site's content. A CMS will allow you to create, edit and delete your site pages without having to know any html or coding. For larger sites, they also make organization easier. The content is stored in a database, which is stored on a web server.

wikipedia.org - CMS is content management system (CMS) software, usually implemented as a Web application, for creating and managing HTML content. It is used to manage and control a large, dynamic collection of Web material. CMS

Keep your content Fresh
Have you ever had to get in touch with your web designer in order to make a small change to your website? If you have then you understand that the change will have to be made on his or her schedule, not yours. If your like me you want to be able to make the changes you want now, then you can move on to the next thing. This is probably the best feature of Content Management Systems, you can change and update your text and pictures anytime you are in front of a computer, and without having to learn complicated coding. As we are told again and again these days, on the web content is king. The fresher your content, the better chance that visitors and search engines will like it. The easier it is to update your site the more likely you will do it.

Features and Functionality
There are literally hundreds of free modules that can plug into your CMS. In most case, these types of features can be available on a normal html website, but they would have to be programed, something that can be time consuming and when it comes to custom programming you can apply this rule of thumb that I've developed: time = money + much more money! With CMS sites these functions can be easily added as a modules, with minimal time and coding, which translates to less cost for you. Here are examples of the type of functionality available

• Blog
• Site search
• Polls
• Contact Forms
• Photo galleries
• Password secured sections
• video galleries
• ECommerce/Shopping cart
• Online community functionality
• Podcasting
• And much, much more

Easy to use Interface
Have you used Microsoft Word before? It's almost as easy as that to add content to your CMS site. Most content management systems have a text editor that mimics the basics of the Word interface. So if you want something bold, hit the Bold button. Insert a picture? just click the picture Icon and upload one from you computer. Simple and intuitive.

Types of CMS's
Two popular open source Content Management Systems that you hear a lot about these days are Wordpress and Joomla. Wordpress was designed as an expandable blogging tool, it is easy to use and can be used to build small to medium sized sites. Joomla (which means "all together" in Swahili) is a feature rich system that is extensible and robust. It works better for medium to large websites with lots of pages and content.
