You have probably been hearing a lot about Twitter lately, and you probably are wondering what all the hype is about. On the surface Twitter seems like just another social media site where you can chat with your friends. Yes, it can be that, but if you dig deeper there is real value in the information being shared (in real time) on Twitter as well as real opportunities to build your brand and drive traffic to your website.
As people begin exploring and realizing the value of Twitter the site has been experiencing exponential growth. In January Twitter had roughly 6 million visitors, currently that number is above 10 million. The demographics may surprise you as well, According to ComScore, the majority of visitors around the world were 35 years old or older, this is not just some texting tool for students.
Like other social media, marketing on Twitter isn't about an overt message, it's more about building relationships and influencing your fellow "tweeps". As a "micro-blog", Twitter lets you share ideas, links and connect with like-minded industry professionals as well as obtain business leads.
Don't get me wrong, Twitter is full of shameless self-promoters, MLM's, and useless information, but in between the the junk the value of Twitter is real.
Being authentic, transparent and helpful are the keys to building "followers". Provide them with insights and share useful information and then when it's time to share your message, you will have their attention.
If your not careful you can spent altogether too much time on Twitter, distracting you from your work. However, by using the right tools and spending about 20 minutes a day you can effectively build your base of followers and deliver your message. Of course the more time you put into it the more you will get out of it. Social media is not a short-term commitment, it is about building relationships and engaging with potential consumers. The more you interact with them the more value you build into your brand.
